This rose-coloured crystal gem comes is forms of stalactites and stalagmites found in Argentina, Peru, Colorado, Montana and Quebec. It can be transparent to translucent in nature. Its rarest color, rose-red, occurs when the mineral has low iron content.

The colors it produces are one-of-a-kind and its there’s just something about Rhodochrosite that makes it look like there’s light coming from within. This glowing quality makes it a popular choice for ornamental and display items.

Rhodochrosite’s soft and brittle nature makes it unsuitable for daily jewellery wear, which is a shame as its beauty deserves to be worn. Nevertheless, it makes a popular choice for figurine carvings and often sliced into circles to feature the concentric bands and veins.

While it is a mineral that can found worldwide, the red varieties are only found in selected places and large specimens of these red crystals have been found in the Sweet Home Mine near Alma in Colorado. The largest Rhodochrosite crystal was found here and named The Alma King. Other varieties of Rhodochrosite have also been found in Butte in Montana; the mines of Franklin in New Jersey, several mines in Ancash Department of Peru, Kazakhstan, Romania, Cornwall in England, Germany, Mexico, South Africa, Canada and Argentina.

There are certain beliefs, values, healing properties and metaphysical attributes associated with Rhodochrosite. It is sometimes called Inca Rose as it is believed by the Incas that Rhodochrosite is the blood of their former rulers turned to stone.
